Knowing which is the best whey protein is not easy, whether you are just starting to use protein supplements to fuel muscle growth or have been using whey protein for years and want to switch. It can be difficult to know where to begin with so many factors to consider, but most individuals will begin with nutritional value, cost, and flavor. To make comparing top brands a bit easier, we decided to take a look at an often asked subject and run a full comparison of two of the big players in the whey protein business, this is... Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard vs MyProtein Impact Whey

Both companies are based in the United Kingdom and sell whey protein as their main and most popular product, while they also sell a variety of additional supplements. To do a fair comparison of MyProtein Impact Whey vs. Optimum Nutrition, we must first comprehend the ingredients in both products and know which ones we are comparing. MyProtein Impact Whey and MyProtein Impact Whey Isolate are two main forms of whey protein (available in a range of flavors) that compare favorably to Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard.

The Key Differences Between Concentrate and Isolate

Whey protein is a fast-acting protein that can be found in almost all protein supplements. Whey isolate is generally more expensive than concentrate since it requires extra processing to obtain isolate status. Liquid whey is collected as a by-product of cheese, yoghurt, and milk production and then processed to make the dried protein. Once this procedure is complete, the product can be dried and blended with flavorings to form a protein powder.

Whey Protein Concentrate, which is found in MyProtein Impact Whey, includes around 80% protein, with the other 20% consisting primarily of carbohydrates and lipids. Gold Standard contains whey isolate, which is 90 percent protein and only 10% lipids and carbohydrates, but it also contains whey concentrate.

MyProtein also sells a 100 percent whey isolate protein powder, which is more expensive than the other two alternatives but has the most protein, the least fat, and the fewest carbs. Unless you're on a strict low-fat, low-carb diet, whey concentrate is OK for you and will actually help you achieve a better balance of macronutrients in your daily diet than those who use isolation.

Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are present in both brands, with the Gold Standard having 5.5 grams and MyProtein having 4.5 grams. These amounts will aid muscle regeneration while also reducing tiredness and pain. It's quite convenient to have them in your protein powder.

Optimum Nutrition has the most protein per serving with 24g, although it's worth noting that they call a serving 32g, whilst MyProtein Impact Whey gives around 21g of protein from a 25g scoop (depending on flavor). In this sense, the MyProtein Isolate is definitely superior, providing 23g of protein per 25g scoop.

Branding and Packaging

Although the packaging and branding of the two protein powders are unlikely to be deal breakers for most individuals, they are still important aspects of the product to consider.

We already know that MyProtein caters to the lower end of the market, whereas Optimum Nutrition prefers to advertise itself as a premium supplement company. This is reflected in the packaging, with MyProtein's goods only available in bags. These plastic bags are quite plain in terms of design (again, not something to base your purchasing choice on), and while the bag quality is decent, we've had varied levels of quality when it comes to the seal. To ensure that the bag is completely sealed with MyProtein, you'll almost certainly need to use a clip.

Large plastic containers with good sized screw tops or plastic bags are available from Optimum Nutrition. To begin, you'll see that the branding on both of these is much more eye-catching — possibly one explanation for this is that Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard is available in retail stores, whilst MyProtein is not. Whether you choose a bag or a tub, the Gold Standard packaging is resealable, as the screw top... well, it screws on, and the bag contains a neat sliding zip lock that always appears to work well – at least we haven't found one that doesn't.

Taste & Flavors

The flavor and taste of your protein shake should be considered when selecting a long-term protein supplement. Of course, you don't have to keep to just one flavor, but in our experience, if you find one that you enjoy and can digest well, sticking to what you know is well worth it.

If you were to compare MyProtein Impact Whey to Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard just on the basis of flavor variety, MyProtein would be the clear winner. MyProtein blows the competition out of the water with over 55 different flavors (all of which we have tried). However, not all of them are pleasant, and there are over ten different kinds of chocolate alone. Gold Standard, on the other hand, offers 14 various flavors, all of which were enjoyable. If you want a higher quality protein, you should choose for the MyProtein Whey Isolate, which comes in only 21 flavors plus unflavored — making it a more even playing field.

Because flavor is such a personal preference, it's difficult to rate a protein shake just on this basis in a written review. However, taste to us encompasses more than simply flavor; it also includes consistency and texture. It's also about how quickly something can be digested. We compared the Gold Standard Chocolate Hazelnut flavor to the MyProtein Impact Whey Chocolate Brownie flavor. We conducted tests with and without milk.

The MyProtein smoothie was smooth and creamy when blended with milk. We liked it because it wasn't as sugary as the other flavors. Even after a double helping, it didn't feel too heavy in our tummies. When we tasted the same flavor with water, the creaminess was removed, and the flavor worsened as a result. It was lighter on our tummies and totally drinking, but it took away some of the fun. In comparison, the Gold Standard tasted great with milk but didn't lose much flavor when blended with simply water. We prefer the Gold Standard to the Silver Standard, although it was a tight call.

It's worth noting that some of the other MyProtein flavors have a more synthetic flavor, and we've heard that the flavors can differ from one order to the next — though we haven't directly experienced this. All of the flavors in Gold Standard have a more natural flavor, and the sweetness levels appear to be more balanced.

This was a tight race, and Gold Standard came out on top in the end.

Money Well Spent

We chose the sizes between 2.2kg and 2.5kg for pricing comparison because they appear to be the most popular. We analyzed prices on Amazon.co.uk to ensure a fair comparison, even though you can buy directly from the manufacturer or from other third-party vendors. Both products have discounts applied, and if you subscribe and save with Amazon, you can get an additional 5-15 percent off. Although discounts were active, we found that they appeared to be ongoing throughout the year.

Last Word

It's fair to say that this was a very close choice, and the winner is ultimately determined by your priorities. The MyProtein Impact Whey range is an obvious winner if you're seeking for a variety of flavors or the lowest price for a decent quality protein shake. It came close in the taste test, has a good nutritional profile, and is just let down by its packaging. In terms of value for money, it is unrivaled.

However, if you're searching for the greatest all-around protein, it'll be a toss-up between Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard and MyProtein's Whey Isolate. Although the Whey Isolate offers the lowest carb and fat levels of all three and, crucially, the highest protein, the Gold Standard brand name provides assurance in terms of overall quality.

It will almost certainly come down to personal preference, and our advise is to think about what matters most to you. If money is no object, Gold Standard is certainly the best option, but if saving 30% or more on your protein shake each month allows you to spend more on pre-workout supplements or even cover a portion of your gym membership, MyProtein Impact Whey is perhaps the best option.
