 5 Acid Reflux Vitamins & Supplements

Acid reflux, generally referred to as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a frequent digestive problem. It has a number of adverse effects, including heartburn, nausea, belching, and stomach discomfort. Most acid reflux treatments include dietary or lifestyle changes in addition to medications such as antacids and proton pump inhibitors. A variety of vitamins, herbs, and supplements may also help with symptom relief. Here are six nutrients that may help with acid reflux therapy.


Betaine HCl with pepsin

Betaine hydrochloride (HCl) is a chemical that is used to raise stomach acid levels.

Low stomach acid levels can impede digestion and nutrient absorption while also causing a variety of negative symptoms such as heartburn, stomach discomfort, and acid reflux. In one study of six people with low stomach acid, taking 1500 mg of betaine HCl increased stomach acidity. In many supplements, betaine hydrochloride is combined with pepsin. Pepsin is a digestive enzyme found in stomach acid that breaks proteins down into smaller pieces. Using pepsin with amino acid hydrochloride significantly improved symptoms such as stomach discomfort and burning in a 6-week study of 97 people with indigestion. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States has determined that there is currently insufficient data to ensure the efficacy of betaine HCl or pepsin in increasing stomach acidity. B vitamins

According to some study, B vitamins such as folate, riboflavin, and vitamin B6 may help cure acid reflux. In fact, one study discovered that greater intake of many B vitamins was linked to a decreased risk of reflux esophagitis, a disorder defined by esophageal inflammation caused by acid reflux. Furthermore, higher folate and vitamin B6 intakes have been related to a decreased risk of esophageal cancer and a disease known as Barrett's esophagus, both of which are potential consequences of long-term GERD. Another earlier research compared the efficacy of a supplement comprising vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, L-tryptophan, melatonin, betaine, and methionine against that of an over-the-counter heartburn medication. After 40 days of therapy, 100% of individuals who took the supplement reported total relief from heartburn symptoms, compared to just 65% of those who took the over-the-counter prescription . However, because B vitamins were only one component of this supplement, it's unclear how much of an influence B vitamins had directly.More study is needed to determine how B vitamins, when given alone, may help acid reflux symptoms. Learn more!


Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that is largely in charge of regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Although melatonin is normally used to treat insomnia and enhance sleep quality, some studies have suggested that it may also help with acid reflux therapy. According to one research of 36 patients, using melatonin for 4–8 weeks, either alone or in combination with heartburn medication, decreased GERD symptoms. Other study has revealed that decreased melatonin levels may be linked to an increased risk of digestive diseases such as peptic ulcers and acid reflux. Furthermore, some research suggests that melatonin may help guard against esophageal inflammation, which may help avoid long-term health complications connected with GERD, such as Barrett's esophagus. Learn more!


Probiotics

Probiotics are helpful microorganisms that live in the digestive system. They are essential for gut health and immunological function. Probiotic supplementation may help reduce acid reflux symptoms, according to some study. For example, one evaluation of 13 research showed that probiotics had a favorable effect on GERD symptoms such as reduced regurgitation, decreased heartburn, and less stomach discomfort and nausea in 79% of them. Another 12-week trial found that combining heartburn medication with probiotics lowered the chance of treatment relapse when compared to a control group that only received heartburn medication.
