Keto Diet For Mental Health

 From digestion to sleep to feeling fatigued or being able to focus, our diet has a direct influence on how well our bodies perform.

Over the years, there have been several fad diets as well as famous diets that have received a lot of attention. Some have been proven to work, while others are just marketing tricks designed to sell commercial items with little evidence to back them up.

Palmer recommends seeking medical consultation before beginning a fasting regimen. "There is always a risk involved in attempting or achieving something.You must do it in the appropriate quantity for your body and medical condition."


Keto: A Medical Approach to Wellness

The ketogenic diet has its supporters and detractors. Some say that it performs admirably, delivering on its promises and producing the intended outcomes. Others say that the diet might cause health problems, particularly in the heart. Keto is more divisive than previous diets that have come and gone because of its polarized support and criticism.

"There's a lot of information—and a lot of misinformation—out there about the keto diet," Palmer says.

"We've been utilizing the ketogenic diet to treat seizures since the early 1900s," Palmer added. Seizure therapy is often used in psychiatry, therefore Palmer noted that "it's not far-fetched to be thinking about an effective, evidence-based seizure treatment alongside the treatment of mental illnesses."

Dr. Russell Wilder coined the term "ketogenic diet" to describe this newer method, which Palmer describes as "the initial fasting-mimicking diet, created to duplicate the advantages of a fasting state." Fasting-induced ketones can be created by a high-fat, low-carb diet, according to R.T. Woodyatt. The body produces ketones when lipids are used as fuel instead of carbs, so there's no need to fast to obtain the same benefit.

But Is the Keto Diet Safe?

The American Diabetes Association now adds low-carb and ketogenic diets among recommended dietary patterns for patients with diabetes, based on the amount of research that has been done on their safety and efficacy.


Considering Starting A New Diet?

Anyone contemplating either diet should always consult with their doctor first. Palmer noted that the most popular variant of the keto diet now in use is primarily focused on weight loss. "As it causes variable amounts of ketone bodies," Palmer explained, this variant of the diet has not been researched for usefulness in mental health treatment. If you want to use the keto diet for mental health treatment, you must follow certain dietary restrictions.
Keto-related recipes, lifestyle modifications, and communities may all be found with a fast Internet search. It's simple to get information on ratios, quantities, and ingredients for the diet you wish to follow. But beware: these materials include a lot of disinformation.

"Because there are so many various variants of the keto diet, it's natural to be confused and skeptical," Palmer said. "If your doctor is unfamiliar with the ketogenic diet, working with a registered ketogenic dietician might be beneficial."

A professionally directed approach to diet, on the other hand, might be a realistic solution to a problem that's been under our noses—and on our plates—for decades.
