Does Tribulus Boost Testosterone?

Tribulus is a herb that it commonly found in over-the-counter testosterone products. It's popular among bodybuilders without being stereotyped. This prompted me to design a scientific study seven years ago, in which I assisted two researchers in compiling a (never published) review of tribulus use and its effects on strength, muscle gain, and testosterone levels. I'll be honest: the research wasn't perfect (hence the lack of publication), and the sample size was small (n=16), but the results were still useful. The bottom line is that.

After 16 weeks of supplementation, there was no difference when compared to a placebo group, which was a long enough trial period to expect to see something. And believe me when I say that we looked. (As a side note, I don't miss ANOVAs, ANCOVAs, or multi-variate analyses at all.) If you're a stats nerd, you'll understand, and you'll probably enjoy these things even more than I could. And it's one of the main reasons I left academia's research side.)

When you dig a little deeper, there's plenty of evidence that tribulus is a waste of money if your goal is to increase testosterone.

The problem is that tribulus is ineffective. We have direct and repeated evidence that tribulus does not increase testosterone in athletic males, and there is plenty of research to back this up. To put it another way, if you're taking tribulus to gain strength or muscle mass, don't expect much.

That isn't to say that tribulus isn't useful. Indeed, it may be beneficial to the cardiovascular system and organ health. It simply does not increase testosterone levels.


This is an extremely important point. Because it can be an effective libido enhancer, tribulus is likely to remain on the market and appear to work. To make users 'feel the effects' of testosterone, libido-enhancing herbs are commonly used in testosterone boosters. Unfortunately, while higher testosterone tends to increase libido, these herbs increase libido without raising testosterone levels.

Tribulus, despite its reputation as a testosterone booster, does not provide any benefits in terms of strength, muscle, or recovery. It may boost your libido, but that doesn't mean it'll boost your testosterone levels.
