Five Tips for Staying Fit in College

Trying to stay fit in college can be a real challenge, what with busy class schedules, homework, exams to study for, and papers to write, not to mention the desire to have some sort of social life. On top of that, many students work between 10 and 25 hours per week at some point during the week. It doesn't matter if you're an undergraduate or a graduate student. When you have so much on your plate and your schedule is filling up, getting to the gym is one of the first things to fall by the wayside.

Here are five tips to help you stay in shape while you're studying.


1. Make a Workout Schedule

Schedule time to work out in the same way you schedule time to write a paper or study for an upcoming exam. Set aside at least 30 minutes to be active during the day if you use an agenda or a mobile calendar. Many studies show that people who exercise regularly improve their grades and develop more concrete, focused study habits.


2. Ride your bike or walk to class.

Regardless of how big or small your campus is, simply biking or walking to class can help you stay in shape. Plan your day so that you can ride your bike or walk to class and still be on time. If you must drive to campus because of your commute, try to park your car further away so that you can bike or walk the rest of the way to class. You can also go for a walk or a bike ride after lunch, before the next class starts, or at the end of a long school day.


3. Keep an eye on your diet

One of the most difficult challenges for students on campus is eating healthy. Because of the hectic schedule and frequent "time constraints," it's easy to just grab and go, putting nutrition on the back burner. However, by simply watching your diet and walking, you can stay in better shape without exerting much effort. To avoid fast food stops, try packing your lunch and carrying a water bottle with you to drink as much water as possible throughout the day.


4. Find a gym buddy to assist you in getting to the gym.

Working out with others has numerous advantages. Staying on track is easier if you have a workout buddy or a small group that meets at the gym on specific days. You are far more likely to actually go to the gym and do the work if you have accountability and someone counting on you to show up. Find someone who shares your fitness goals and interests and make plans to workout together.


5. Take a Study Break at the Gym

It is necessary for everyone to take a break from studying. Make a schedule where you go to the gym for a workout during one of those breaks. It will help you focus better, clear your mind, and return to it when you're finished. Study for a few hours, then go for a workout for an hour and then get back to work!
