What is it, exactly?

Vitamin K is a combination of three fat-soluble vitamins that has been suspected of playing a role as a critical nutrient since 1929 and was successfully identified in 1939. Plants with green leaves

Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is a naturally occurring type of vitamin K that comes from green plants. Another natural form (menaquinone, vitamin K2) is produced by animals and intestinal microbes. Vitamin K3, also known as menaphthone or menadione, is the third type of vitamin K.

Vitamin K3 comes in two forms: fat-soluble and water-soluble. The fat-soluble form is nearly twice as powerful as phylloquinone.

When researchers initially discovered vitamin K in 1929, they discovered that chickens fed only the basic elements (and hence devoid of vitamin K) had hemorrhagic illnesses. When the vitamin was isolated ten years later, its significance in normal blood clotting was recognized.

Vitamin K has a role in blood clotting by assisting in the production of prothrombin and other proteins. Vitamin K is also involved in the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin (an important protein in blood clotting).

Vitamin K is also necessary for the conversion of osteocalcin to its active form, which is why it is crucial in bones. This controls the role of calcium in bone turnover and mineralization.

Vitamin K is important for the health of bones, teeth, and cartilage because it is required for the function of a protein called MGP, which is found in all three. Vitamin K is required for proper kidney function because it produces a urinary protein that prevents the production of calcium oxalate kidney stones.


What Are Some Symptoms Of Deficiency?

Deficiency is extremely rare in people who consume a well-balanced diet. It can, however, occur in people who don't eat enough green vegetables or who use medications that inhibit the growth of gut bacteria that make vitamin K2.

Those with extended diarrhea, obstructive jaundice, liver illness, or malabsorption issues are at risk of deficiency. Longer time for blood to coagulate, easy bleeding and bruising, blood tinged urine, and stomach bleeding are all signs of deficiency. Deficiency is more common in newborns and the elderly.


Are There Any Side Effects?

To avoid deficiency problems, get at least the RDA for vitamin K, which is 1mcg per kilogram of body weight. It's also estimated that half of this quantity comes from intestinal bacteria, so if you're taking antibiotics, you may need to modify your food consumption. 80mcg for men and 65mcg for women is a simpler way to think about it.

If you are an active training athlete, however, the RDA will most likely be insufficient, which is why athletes should follow the PDI (Performance Daily Intake). The PDI ranges from 80 to 180 mcg for both men and women. Adults receiving vitamin K should consume between 80 and 600 micrograms each day.

Overdosing on vitamin K is rare, and even heavy ingestion over long periods of time has not been linked to toxicity. In lab rats and newborns, high doses have been shown to cause hemolytic anemia (the dissociation of hemoglobin from red blood cells).

The synthetic water-soluble vitamin K3 (menadione) has a greater safety margin than the other fat-soluble forms, synthetic or natural. Furthermore, because vitamin E and A have antagonistic effects on vitamin K, excessive intakes of these vitamins may raise the risk of bleeding. Anticoagulant medicines, such as warfarin, can be affected by vitamin K supplements (aka, rat poison).


Where can I get it?

Vitamin K is present in a large number of foods. Broccoli and other dark leafy veggies are excellent suppliers. 200 mcg of vitamin K is included in 1/2 cup of chopped, cooked broccoli, which is more than enough to meet your RDA or PDI.
